The quality of an organization’s Board has a tremendous impact on the performance of the organization. Generally speaking, Board members are volunteers who have a desire to see the organization grow and prosper. Performance metrics as they relate to improvement and management of their own performance on the Board, however, are not usually top-of-mind.

It’s important for Boards to recognize that the success of any organization ultimately depends upon the capacity of its directors to provide the vision and direction needed not only to survive, but also to develop and prosper. Therefore, organizations must make a commitment to develop the capacity of the Board of Directors and improve both their personal and collective contributions to the overall development of the organization.

Evaluation is a way of checking your progress against your plans and visions. For the same reason, it is important for the Board of Directors to evaluate its own performance on a regular basis. After all, shouldn't the Board hold itself to the same standards it holds for all other areas of your organization?
